Why Self-Catering in a Lodge is a Joy (and a Little Different)

There’s nothing quite like waking up in a wooden lodge, stepping onto the deck with a mug of tea, and knowing you’ve got a full day of countryside ahead. Self-catering gives you freedom: eat when you like, cook what you fancy, and save money for the pub. But lodge kitchens are not your kitchen at home. They’re compact, sometimes quirky, and often equipped with a random assortment of pans and utensils. A little preparation goes a long way.

Check the Inventory Before You Shop

Don’t assume a lodge kitchen has everything. Many owners provide a decent basics kit, but items go missing. Ask for an inventory list before you arrive, or do a quick check when you unpack. Here’s what to look for.

  • Knives: Often blunt or tiny. Bring a sharp paring knife or small chef’s knife if you’re driving. If flying, pack one in hold luggage.
  • Utensils: Check for a wooden spoon, spatula, ladle, whisk, tin opener, corkscrew, and vegetable peeler. These are frequently missing or of poor quality.
  • Pans and trays: Look for a frying pan, saucepan, casserole dish, and baking tray. Non-stick surfaces may be scratched, so bring a small non-stick pan if you’re fussy.
  • Chopping boards: Usually one small board. A flexible cutting mat is light and handy.
  • Measuring: Measuring jug, scales, and spoons are often absent. A collapsible measuring jug saves space.
  • Other useful items: Colander, grater, garlic press, potato masher. Nice to have, but not guaranteed.

Staples: What to Bring and What to Check

Most lodges leave a welcome pack: tea, coffee, milk, maybe biscuits. But assume nothing else. Check for salt, pepper, cooking oil, and vinegar. Often there’s a tiny amount left by previous guests, but don’t rely on it.

  • Bring: Stock cubes, dried herbs, spices you love (paprika, cumin, chilli flakes), soy sauce, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup. Decant into small pots or a spice tin.
  • Check: Flour, sugar, rice, pasta, tinned tomatoes. Some lodges provide, many don’t.
  • Local top-up: Buy fresh produce, bread, cheese, and meat from village shops or farm shops. It’s part of the holiday.
  • Allergies and diets: If you need gluten-free pasta, plant milk, or specific sauces, bring your own. Don’t assume they’ll be there.

Cleaning Supplies and Kitchen Practicalities

You’ll want to leave the kitchen as you found it. Check what’s provided before you arrive, or bring a small cleaning kit.

  • Washing-up: Liquid, sponges, cloths, tea towels. Usually provided, but quality varies. Bring a couple of microfibre cloths and a spare tea towel.
  • Dishwasher: If there is one, check tablets are supplied. If not, bring a few.
  • Bin bags: Often one or two provided. Bring a roll of bin liners that fit a standard pedal bin.
  • Surface cleaner: Anti-bacterial spray or wipes. Also bring a small bottle of washing-up liquid if you’re particular.
  • Oven gloves, matches, foil, cling film: Check. Matches for a gas hob or log burner. Foil for traybakes.
  • Recycling: Check local rules. Often separate bins for glass, plastic, and food waste.

A quick wipe-down each evening saves a big clean on departure day.

Planning Meals in a Small Space

Lodge kitchens are compact. Worktops fill up fast. Plan simple meals: one-pot pasta, traybakes, stir-fries, hearty soups. Use the oven and hob together. If there’s a slow cooker or barbecue, even better.

  • Breakfast: Porridge, eggs, toast. Bring your own coffee if you’re fussy.
  • Lunch: Picnic style. Local bread, cheese, ham, salad. No cooking.
  • Dinner: Cook once, eat twice. Chilli, curry, casserole. Reheat on the hob.
  • Snacks: Fruit, nuts, biscuits. Keep it simple.

Don’t forget to check the fridge temperature. Lodge fridges can be small and struggle in summer. Use a cool bag for extra items.

A Few Final Pointers for a Smooth Stay

Before you book, ask the owner for a full inventory of the kitchen. Some lodges are better equipped than others. If you’re arriving late, bring a takeaway or a ready meal for the first night.

  • Pack a small kit: Sharp knife, corkscrew, tin opener, tea towel, washing-up sponge, salt and pepper.
  • Check the hob: Gas, electric, or induction? Bring the right pans if induction (many lodges have induction now).
  • Leave it clean: Wash up, wipe surfaces, take rubbish out. Respect the next guests.
  • Enjoy the local area: Farm shops, markets, delis. Self-catering is about tasting the place.

With a little forethought, your lodge kitchen becomes a happy base for countryside feasts. Happy cooking.
